Watermelon is a summer favorite, but the prices are soaring.
Watermelons are being sold at a staggering price in major supermarkets due to the change of season and challenges with supply.
Coles now sells the fruit at $3.90-4.50 a kilo, depending on its state, or about $36 per whole melon, depending on weight. Woolworths has a slightly higher price of $34.32, while Woolworths offers it for $34.30.
As the fruit enters a new growing season, its higher price is blamed on the unpredictable weather patterns that occur in the Northern Territory.
As the weather heats up, Australia is experiencing a “crossover” of watermelon-growing regions. Northern Queensland has replaced the Northern Territory.
Woolworths’ spokesperson stated that “quality fresh watermelons are still available” and “our farmers have told us they have a great harvest on the way, just in time for the summer. So our customers can expect an improvement in coming weeks.”
We are committed to providing our customers with quality Australian fruits and vegetables at a great price. When in-season products are in abundance, we strive to pass on those savings to our clients.
The peak watermelon season is from December to May. This means that there will be a large influx of fruit over the summer, which should bring down prices.
Watermelon fans will have to wait, but there are other fruit treats in store.
Strawberry punnets are now selling as low as $2.80, while blueberries that were once infamously expensive are now as cheap as $1.80.
Coles is promoting its newest crop of products, including “berries, citrus, tomatoes, cucumbers and berries.”
Coles’ spokesperson stated that there is much to look forward to in the summer months. We expect a good season of quality and abundance for Australian stone fruits and mangoes.
